What we collect, why, and what we will never do with it.

Written to be read, not to protect us. If anything here is unclear, ask and we will explain it.

This is a draft. It has been written to cover what AniTrac will actually do, but it has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and the company details, information officer and contact address still need to be filled in. It must be checked against the Protection of Personal Information Act before the site goes live.

The short version

  • We collect your contact details so we can reply to you, and your herd details so we can quote you properly.
  • Where your animals are is your data. We hold it so the system works, but we do not sell it, and we do not hand it to anyone without your say so.
  • We share location data with the police only when you ask us to, in the event of a theft.
  • We share it with an insurer only if you have chosen a package where that is the point.
  • You can ask us what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it.

Who is responsible

AniTrac is the responsible party for the personal information described here, as that term is used in the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013.

Company registration and information officer to be added

The Act requires a responsible party to appoint an information officer and register them with the Information Regulator. Until that is done and the name appears here, write to the address above and it will reach the right person.

What we collect

When you contact us

Your name, email address, phone number and province, plus whatever you tell us about your herd and your situation. We ask for these because we cannot quote a farm we know nothing about, and we cannot reply to someone with no contact details.

When you use the cost calculator

Nothing. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The numbers you type are not sent to us and are not stored anywhere. You can use it without telling us who you are.

When you become a customer

Your billing details, your farm location, and the position and movement history of the animals carrying our devices. The device data is what makes the service work. It is collected continuously while your subscription is active.

Your herd location data

This deserves its own section, because it is the most sensitive thing we hold. Knowing where livestock is and when it moves is exactly the information a thief would want.

  • We do not sell it. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
  • We do not publish it. Aggregate theft patterns may inform where we build gateways, but never in a form that identifies a farm.
  • Access is restricted. Only staff who need it to run monitoring or a recovery can see it, and access is logged.
  • It is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • You can export it and you can ask us to delete it when you leave.

Who we share it with

Who AniTrac shares personal information with and on what basis
WhoWhatWhen
SAPS Stock Theft UnitLocation and movement history for the affected animalsOnly when you report a theft and ask us to assist
Your insurerIncident reports and relevant tracking dataOnly if you have chosen an insurance linked package
Our recovery teamLive location during an active recoveryOnly during that recovery
Hosting and communication providersThe data needed to run the service and send you alertsOngoing, under contract, and they may not use it for anything else

If a court or the law requires us to hand over information, we will comply, and we will tell you unless we are legally prevented from doing so.

How long we keep it

Enquiry details are kept for two years unless you ask us to remove them sooner. Customer account and billing records are kept for five years after your subscription ends, because tax law requires it. Herd location history is kept for the life of your subscription and deleted within ninety days of it ending, unless you ask us to keep it or it forms part of an open theft investigation.

Your rights

Under the Protection of Personal Information Act you may:

  • Ask what personal information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct anything that is wrong
  • Ask us to delete information we no longer have a reason to keep
  • Object to us using your information in a particular way
  • Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if you think we have got it wrong

Write to our information officer and we will respond within thirty days. There is no charge for asking.

Cookies and tracking

This site sets no cookies and runs no advertising or analytics trackers. If that changes, this page will say so and you will be asked before anything non essential is set.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we handle your information in a way that matters, we will tell existing customers directly rather than quietly updating this page.

Questions? Ask us anything about how your data is handled before you sign up, not after. Get in touch.
